Topographic Maps: Glen Hazel, Wilcox, Ridgway

County Maps: Elk

Description: This little tributary of the Clarion is controlled by the East Branch Dam and flows through Bendigo State Park. For most of the run, the stream is small and winding in the relatively wide and flat valley. [Reported 1987]

Difficulties: There are some weirs which can be run if the water is sufficient. The first dam is about 0.5 miles downstream from the Glen Hazel road bridge. The second is in Bendigo State Park and is a 3-4 foot recreational dam; carry on river left. At the upper edge of Johnsonburg there is a 6 foot dam; carry on river right. Just below US Route 219 in Johnsonburg, there is a 3 foot industrial dam; scout and carry is recommended. This dam is walled in on both sides, so you will need to carry around the buildings and across US Route 219. Portage on the right. Weirs built in CCC days should be checked before running.

Shuttle: Put in at Glen Hazel road bridge or drive dirt road upstream right towards dam. To get to the take-out, go southwest on State Route 1004. Take out at the ball field along US Route 219 below paper mill in Johnsonburg. A take-out at the first bridge as you approach Johnsonburg avoids the last two dams and reduces the trip by 1 mile.

Gauges: East Branch Dam. This gauge should read above 2.0 feet. This corresponds to a flow of 70 cfs. The Ridgway gauge further downstream will probably read above 4.5 feet.

Normal Wet Period: The East Branch Dam gauge is above 2.0 feet 60% of the time.
